For the first time in the history of MotoGP, Thailand hosted the season opener, kicking off the 2026 championship at the iconic Chang International Circuit from 27 February to 1 March 2026.

The atmosphere in Buriram was electric. Tens of thousands of fans packed the grandstands, waving flags under the blazing Thai sun as the sport’s fastest riders prepared to launch a brand-new season. The heat, hovering close to 40°C, added another layer of intensity to an already historic weekend.

The 2026 season carries extra significance. It marks the final year before the sweeping 2027 MotoGP regulation changes, meaning teams are determined to end the current era on top. With powerhouse factories, rookie debuts and renewed rivalries, the championship began exactly as fans hoped – dramatic, unpredictable and full of action.

The 2026 Season Starts with a Bang in Buriram

The build-up to the opener had already been intense. Pre-season testing began in Malaysia at the Sepang circuit before teams travelled to Thailand for the final shakedown at Buriram, giving riders valuable track time in the same scorching conditions they would face on race weekend.

One storyline dominated the paddock: Marquez vs. Marquez. The sibling rivalry still became one of the most compelling narratives of the year.

With Francesco Bagnaia defending Ducati’s honour and Marco Bezzecchi pushing hard for Aprilia, the grid arrived in Buriram looking more competitive than ever.

Fans could feel it: 2026 was going to be special.

2026 MotoGP Thailand GP Results: The Sunday Showdown

Sunday’s main event – a 26-lap race starting at 3pm local time – proved to be a true test of endurance.

The Thai heat punished tyres and riders alike. Managing grip became just as important as outright speed and the leading group constantly exchanged positions throughout the race.

Key moments included:

  • Late braking battles into Turn 3
  • Slipstream duels on the long Buriram straight
  • Strategic tyre preservation in the final laps

The front pack featured familiar contenders including Francesco Bagnaia, Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi – each pushing to secure early championship momentum.

In the final laps, the race turned into a tactical fight between riders managing fading rear tyres while still hunting for overtaking opportunities.

The result? A thrilling podium that set the tone for what could become one of the most competitive MotoGP seasons in years.

What the Riders Said

After the race, riders shared their thoughts in the official press conference.

Maverick Vinales spoke about missing his front grip:

“We tried different things during Warm-up but the result was the same as Saturday and I missed front grip. In the test I had felt better but it was getting a bit worse each day this weekend. I was very slow in mid-corner and missing the turns. It was very strange. We need to forget this weekend and work for the next one.”

Meanwhile, Marco Bezzecchi praised the progress made by Aprilia:

After the mistake in the sprint, it was important to stay calm and bounce back. The victory in Buriram is a very pleasing result. We worked well in testing, so it was crucial to confirm our form over the race weekend as well – something we were unable to do last year, despite a good test here. In the race, I tried to give it my all without making mistakes, so I’m very pleased with this victory.

The paddock consensus was clear: the performance gap between manufacturers is smaller than ever.

Conclusion

The Thailand Grand Prix delivered exactly what fans hoped for – pure MotoGP drama.

From the Marquez sibling rivalry to the debut of Toprak Razgatlioglu and fierce battles among the factory teams, the 2026 championship has started with serious momentum.

With the current regulations entering their final season before the major 2027 changes, every race this year will carry extra importance.

Next stop for the championship: Brazil, where the grid will face a completely different circuit and conditions – promising another unpredictable weekend.
